ABSTRACT

Plasma and BALF PGF[2alpha] were estimated in 30 patients with bronchial asthma and 10 apparently healthy subjects in order to clarify its role in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma and its possible relation to the disease severity. The results showed a significant increase in plasma PGF[2alpha] [3 folds] and a highly significant increase in BALF PGF[2alpha] [5 folds] in bronchial asthma pateints. This rise was apparent in different subgroups of asthmatic pateints [extrinsic intrinsic mild, moderate and severe] when compared with the control group. A significant positive correlation was observed between plasma PGF[2alpha] and BALF PGF[2alpha] While a non-significant negative correlation between both plasma PGF[2alpha] and BALF PGF[2alpha] and either FEV[1]/FVC% or blood eosinophil count. In conclusion the highly raised bronchoalveolar lavage fluid PGF[2alpha] [5 times] in bronchial asthma patients suggests its local release and the slightly raised plasma PGF[2alpha] [3folds] in bronchial asthma patient may be a reflection of its local production

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out on 50 oral Lichen planus patients in an attempt to throw light on the interesting association of oral lichen planus and diabetes mellitus. They were subjected to: 1. Clinical examination 2. Glucose tolerance test 3. Histopathological study 4. Histochemical study of glycogen and succinic dehydrogenase enzyme. According to glucose tolerance test 64% of studied patients had abnormalities in glucose metabolism, with diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in 28% of them. The incidence of diabetes mellitus in patients with oral lichen planus showed predilection towards males and old age. It was directly proportional to remission and exacerbation of the lesions. The histopathological difference between diabetic, potentially diabetic and non- diabetic oral lichen planus lesions was found to be non specific where only the epithelial atrophy and ulceration were found to be more common in diabetic cases while signs of dysplasia were found to be more common in non- diabetic cases. Histochemically, there was decreased glycogen content of tissues involved by oral lichen planus lesions with the degree of glycogen reduction was found to be more marked in diabetic than in non diabetic cases As regard succinic dehydrogenase, it showed decreased activity within the epithelium, especially in the basal cell layer, of oral lichen planus lesions and the degree of enzyme reduction was found to be the same among diabetic, potentially diabetic and non-diabetic lesions. From this study, we concluded that there is an association between oral lichen planus and diabetes mellitus without significant histopthological difference between the lesions of diabetic and non-diabetic patients

ABSTRACT

This work was done on 40 cases of fracture lateral humeral condyle reviewed. 30 cases fixed by K-wires and 10 cases treated by open reduction and fixed by catgut sutures. The late results were evaluated in both groups. It was proved that internal fixation by K-wire is more secure and stable, with better late results

ABSTRACT

After treating 24 patients with fracture of the waist of the scaphoid and their follow up, these considerations could be recommendedr. 1. Conservative treatment is the main line of treatment of recent fracture scaphoid. Operative treatment is only confined to complications. 2. When fracture scaphoid is suspected clinically but not radiologically, the case should be treated as fracture scaphoid till the diagnosis is confirmed by another X-ray two weeks later. 3. Immobilization in Bohler below elbow scaphoid plaster with inclusion of the thumb is the rule while extension of the plaster to above the elbow is not essential. 4. Simple below elbow plaster without inclusion of the thumb has no place in the treatment of fracture scaphoid

ABSTRACT

1. The operative treatment of flexion deformity hip after poliomyelitis gave 83.33% satisfactory result. 2. Satisfactory result was more when the angle of deformity was less than 30 degrees. 3. The presence of associated flexion deformity knee is a cause of unsatisfactory result. 4. Soutter's operation is most suitable in flexion deformity less than 30 degrees. 5. Compell's operation is more suitable when the flexion deformity is more than 30 degrees. 6. Yount oepration had the least satisfactory result and can be used only as supplementary procedure to the two other operations
